Mr Wetherell was a medical practitioner living at the crest of West Hill, Highgate. He had examined every railway cutting or other digging in the area. He had found these strange deposits not only in Coldfall Wood, but all over the district. There were Belemnites, which were fossils of cuttlefish skeletons, and Devil's Toenails, which was the country name for fossils of the snail Gryphia. He had found stone from Scotland, Lincolnshire, and even Scandinavia, all carried here in jackets of ice and deposited as huge layers of Boulder Clay when the ice melted.
