The World Before Westway

The 1902 Goad Fire Insurance map of the area between Bell Street and Chapel Street shows shops of all sorts and some houses with back gardens on the outside of the block, with factories, storage, and residential accommodation above. In the centre are a mews with stables, a church, a school, and the warehouses and bakery of the Home & Colonial Stores. A complete mixture which had grown up piecemeal.

This map shows the street frontages which persisted until 1970, when Westway swept through, obliterating almost all the buildings.

The Metropolitan Railway still runs below and the
trains can still be heard from Christchurch.
