New Buildings on Paddington Basin
In 1999 Paddington Basin Developments Ltd. was given planning permission for the first phase of the 185,000 square metres of commercial and residential buildings planned for the Basin. This first phase would create about a quarter of the final development.
Famous architects including Broadway Malyan, Terry Farrell & Partners, Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners, Siddel Gibson, Skidmore Ownings & Merrill, and Richard Rogers Partnership, had been appointed to build on different sites, so that generations of students as yet unborn, will come to the basin to study the state of architecture at the beginning of the 21st Century. For those of us who watched it rise it was an exhilarating experience.
The next few pages describe the different plans as seen at theturn of the century. There would be changes. History would intervene on occasion, but this seemed to be the position at the moment. The contrast between the end of the 19th century and the start of the 21st is illustrated right at the end of the book.
