There are two different forms of Carrara Marble on the dais, one white/cream, the other more milky and translucent. The milky sort was closer to the heat and melted more completely. In the marble on the dais are black and grey lines called stylolites (stylo - pen). These are the traces of clay which was included in the original limestone.
